VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR THE 2015 WASTE MANAGEMENT PHOENIX OPEN
One of the largest attended events in Arizona, the Waste Management Phoenix Open (WMPO), is steadily approaching! The WMPO will take place from January 26-February 1, 2015 at the Tournament Players Club (TPC) of Scottsdale, AZ. Not only is it the greatest show on grass, but it is also the greenest. This year, Waste Management will host the Zero Waste Event, an initiative aimed at educating vendors and patrons about proper disposal of waste, so that eventually zero waste is sent to the landfill. In 2014, for the second consecutive year, the WMPO diverted 100 percent of waste away from landfills and into recycling and composting facilities. This accomplishment would not have been possible without the help of volunteers.
The Zero Waste Event is promoting three Zero Waste Stations (ZWS) in 2015, which will be located in high traffic areas on the course. These stations are 40-yard dumpsters that have been completely transformed and given another life to become interactive focal points of the tournament’s recycling and composting mission. The Zero Waste Stations are, in essence, a reverse concession stand. Fans drop-off their various waste items and volunteers sort the materials into the appropriate recycling and compost bins. Additionally, 6,000 recycling and compost bins will be located around the course into which fans can drop their material.
We need your help! The time commitment is minimal for playing such a vital role in the tournament’s sustainability initiatives. There are two shifts per day, which last approximately 4 hours each (10am-2pm and 2pm-6pm or until end of play). We encourage our volunteers to take their responsibilities further, should you want to work additional shifts. However, we are only asking volunteers to register for one 4-hour shift on any day of your choice (Monday through Sunday. Please note that volunteers are in high need on January 31 and February 1).
Being a Zero Waste Station volunteer has its perks! Individuals will receive a FREE walking pass (good for any one day) to come back and enjoy the tournament for each shift completed. Volunteers will also receive a meal ticket to be used on a break during the shift or once the shift is completed. Zero Waste Stations are an interactive opportunity to engage with fans and increase environmental awareness while helping us meet our Zero Waste Event goals.
Thank you for taking the time to consider this volunteer opportunity. If becoming a Zero Waste Station volunteer is of interest to you or your organization, please register today at http://wmphoenixopen.com/volunteer/.
